Tom Hanks has been active in the film industry for over twenty-five years, having starred in several top romantic movies such as "Sleepless in Seattle", and "You've Got Mail". With his diverse and strong performances, he has earned his spot as one of the most respected contemporary actors. Hanks’ first big break didn’t come in the movies, but actually on the TV show “Bosom Buddies”. After a guest spot on “Happy Days”, director Ron Howard asked Hanks to be part of his new film “Splash”. Hanks ended up playing the romantic lead Allen Bauer, across from Daryl Hannah, who plays the mermaid, Madison. This movie helped to further launch his career and was also one of the first romantic comedy movies that Hanks would make.

As Hanks’ career progressed, he switched from comedic roles, to more serious dramatic performances. In 1993, he won his first Best Actor Academy Award for the role of Andrew Beckett in the movie “Philadelphia”.  The next year, he won another Oscar for playing the lead character in the movie “Forrest Gump”. Since then, he has been nominated several times, but has not won.  Hanks has not limited his involvement in films to simply acting, he is also a producer, director and writer. In 1996, Hanks directed his first feature film, “That Thing You Do!” for which he had also written the screenplay, and played one of the main characters.  Tom Hanks is currently working on the movie “Larry Crowne” for which he co-wrote the screenplay with Nia Vardalos. Hanks co-stars in the film with Julia Roberts.
