While her first dozen film roles were in small or unsuccessful movies, her big breakout role was in the movie “Speed”. It was this film which really established her as a popular and loveable, new actress. While not the main character in the movie, Bullock’s portrayal of Annie Porter, a bus passenger, who is forced to take the wheel of the hijacked bus, brings a great deal of spirit and strength to her role.

After “Speed”, she continued to make many films, which established her as one of Hollywood’s loveable leading ladies. Bullock earned her first Golden Globe nomination for her role as Lucy Moderatz in the romantic comedy “While You Were Sleeping”, which was released in 1995 and also starred Bill Pullman and Peter Gallagher. Bullock then played the lead in the star-studded, legal thriller, “A Time to Kill” based on the John Grisham novel, which featured Samuel L. Jackson, Ashley Judd and Kevin Spacey.  This film was released in 1996.
