Richard Gere has been a part of the movie and television industry for nearly 30 years now, and has acted in many popular romance movies. His first few acting parts were in TV movies or supporting parts in some commercial films. The first role which garnered Gere some serious attention was when he played the lead in “Days of Heaven”, directed by Terrence Malick. Then, just two years later, he starred in Paul Schrader’s film “American Gigolo”, which firmly rooted Gere as a Hollywood leading man. Next came the very popular and loved movie, “An Officer and a Gentleman” in 1982. Gere played main character Zachary Mayo, in this romantic drama about a struggling student at the Naval Flight School, who falls in love with a beautiful factory worker named Paula.

Gere made several films throughout the 1980s, but his next big success came in 1990 with the film “Pretty Woman”.

Still adored today, this romantic comedy pairs Gere with the charming Julia Roberts in this Cinderella story about a prostitute who falls in love with her wealthy client.

“Pretty Woman” was directed by Garry Marshall and has a screenplay written by J.F. Lawton.

Gere has starred in number of period romance movies, dramas and comedies, including “Sommersby”, “”First Knight”, “Runaway Bride” and most recently “Nights in Rodanthe”.

Having been nominated for several Golden Globes for best Actor, Gere finally won his first in 2002 for his performance of Billy Flynn in the screen adaptation of “Chicago”.

One of Gere’s most recent films was the biography drama “Amelia”, about the aviator Amelia Earhart, in which he plays George Putnam, her husband.
