Julia Roberts Films: The Beginning

Julia Roberts is one of the most popular contemporary actresses, who is best known for her auburn hair, big smile and engaging onscreen personality. She has been making films for over twenty years. Her works range widely from comedies to dramas including several popular romantic movies.

Whether she is playing the lead in a romantic comedy or in a drama, Roberts fills her characters with life, drive and passion. One of her first critically film roles was in Mystic Pizza, a coming-of-age story about two sisters and their friend, who work as waitresses at a restaurant called Mystic Pizza. She won her first Golden Globe Award and received her first Academy Award nomination for her role as Shelby Latcherie in the southern drama “Steel Magnolias”. The movie which launched Julia Roberts to stardom was “Pretty Woman”, the Cinderella story of a prostitute who falls in love with one of her clients. Playing Vivian Ward in “Pretty Woman” earned her another Golden Globe award and another Academy Award Nomination.

For the next ten years after “Pretty Woman”, Roberts made a large variety of movies, ranging from romantic comedies, like “My Best Friend’s Wedding”, to suspense “The Pelican Brief”, to fantasy “Hook” and even to the unsuccessful horror/thriller “Mary Reilly”.

However, in 2001, she finally won her first Academy Award, for the film “Erin Brockovich”.

Julia Roberts played the title character, Erin, a single mother who helped to file a large lawsuit against a giant energy company.

Between 2000 and 2010, Julia Roberts again made a slew of very successful and diverse films. In 2001, she was in “America’s Sweethearts”, alongside John Cusack, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Billy Crystal. In 2003, she starred in the drama “Mona Lisa Smile” about an outspoken teacher at an all-girls college in the 1950s.

“Ocean’s Eleven” the star-studded crime/comedy film is arguably one of the most popular films she starred in, in the last ten years.

Roberts played the poised, self-possessed Tess Ocean, ex-wife of the main character, Danny Ocean.

Julia Roberts’ latest film is “Eat Pray Love” which was released in August, 2010. This is the story of a woman, who after her painful divorce, decides to spend a year traveling around the world and discovers spirituality, the joy of food and even finds true love. “Eat Pray Love” stands out both for both being based on a true story as well as for its diverse filming locations, and is already one of the best romance films of 2010. Julia Roberts stars in another movie scheduled to be released in mid-2011, co-starring Tom Hanks, a comedy-drama entitled “Larry Crowne” written by Nia Vardalos and Tom Hanks.
