Far and Away (1992)
Directed by Ron Howard, “Far and Away” captures the feeling of the old romantic period movies. Joseph is a poor, young Irishman, who loses his home and land, after his father passes away. Determined to take revenge, he attempts to shot the landlord who unjustly took it. When the gun backfires on Joseph and he is injured, the landlord’s beautiful daughter, Shannon Christie tends to him. Dreaming of a more modern life away from her straight-laced family, Shannon tells Joseph of her plans to go to America to claim land which is being given away for free. Shannon cannot go by herself, so Joseph agrees to travel with her to America, posing as her servant. However, once they arrive in America, the star-crossed lovers soon discover many obstacles in their path. Will they ever be able to gain the land and freedom that they have both dreamed of? And will they be able to be together?
Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, who were husband and wife in real-life at the time, play the romantic leads Joseph and Shannon. The story was developed by Ron Howard and Bob Dolman. Far and Away was released in 1992. This is a sweeping epic shot in the old style, using Panavision Super 70mm.
